DEFECTS IN RESIDENCE TO BE AVOIDED :

Our sages have referred to many types of defects in the houses simple to understand and the results given by them are which are quite interesting.
houses. These are:Vishwakarma Prakash says that there are 16 types of defects in the
1. Andhakagriha exhaust or niche.
House that does not have any window, air
2. Känagriha – A house which has window, air exhaust or niche in the corners.
3. Kubjakagriha – A house that has walls in disproportion.
4. Badhiragriha – A house which has entry door below the ground level
5. Digvaktragriha – A house that has many holes in the wall on all sides.
6. Rudhiragriha – A house that has constructions that lead to wounds and has filth all around.
7. Chipitagriha – A house that does not have sufficient height.
8. Vyangagriha – A house whose shape is inauspicious.
9. Murajagriha A house that has the rear portion inappropriately or extraordinarily high.
10. Kutilagriha – A house that is uneven.
11.Shankhpalagriha – A house which has its floor level lower than the road outside.
12. Vikatagriha – A house which is uneven on all sides or whose outer wall is inclined to the cardinal directions.
13. Kankagriha – A house which has an open rear area
14. Kainkaragriha – A house that is inordinately high and shaped like a plough.
15. Kuttakagriha – A house that has an entry door of such a small height that it hits the head while going in or out.
16. Suptagriha – A house that is too long or is low in height.
The classic says, one should not live in such houses but leave them. The results of the above defects are given below:
1. Andhakagriha  Many diseases that turns into chronic diseases
2. Kânagriha – Disease of the eyes
3. Kubjakagriha – Diseases like Leprosy
4. Badhiragriha – General unhappiness and separation
5. Digvaktragriha – Miscarriage
6. Rudhiragriha – Diarrhoea and contagious diseases
7. Chipitagriha – Closeness to the low level people
8. Vyangagriha – General inauspicious results
9. Murajagriha – Submissive, sufferings
10. Kutilagriha – Submissive, sufferings
11. Shankhpalagriha – Ugliness in nature and in appearance
12. Vikatagriha – Loss of children
13. Kankagriha – Members of family away from home
14. Kainkaragriha – Loss to females of the family,serving others
15. Kuttakagriha – Fear of ghosts
16. Suptagriha – Head of the family is away from the house
Other defects:
1. If a house is made of wood and the same is damaged due to lightening, then living in such a house leads to loss of lives.
2. If the wood of the house is burnt, then it leads to loss of wealth and children.
3. If the wooden house is not square or rectangle and is of uneven outer wall, then the family have to live away from the native place.
4. If the wooden house has many holes, then it leads to fear of death
5. If the house has stones and hill in the middle of the house,then it is inauspicious in general
6. Triangular house leads to death
7. A house that is too long leads to unnecessary expenditure and losses .

The vedha due to unwanted structure in front of the main entrance vedhas that are applicable to the complete house: been discussed in the chapter on doors. Given below are some

1. Kona Vedha and Ardha Kona Vedha – When the front portion has wall of another house, it is called Kona Vedha. If there is corner of another house in the front, it is called Ardha Kona Vedha. Both results into losses, diseases and trouble from the enemies.
2. DrishtiVedha – When there is main door of another house in front of the house, it is called DrishtiVedha. It leads to loss of wealth and death like sufferings.
3. KshudraVedha – If there is another small house in front of the house, it is called KshudraVedha. It leads to losses of pets and vehicles.
4. ChāyaVedha – If shadow of another house falls on the house during the second and third part of the day, it leads to diseases and losses of pets.
5. RijuVedha – A house that has a side longer and other smaller is called RijuVedha. This type of house, in general, is very inauspicious.
6. Vansha or Agra Vedha – If the front of the house has wall of another house it’s called Agra Vedha. It creates problem to the lineage.
7. Bhumi Vedha – If the north and east side is higher compared to the south and west, then it is called BhumiVedha. Such house is also generally inauspicious and is not considered good from all the three needs of Vastu,namely physical (wealth and luxuries), mental and spiritual.
8. Dantavedha – A house that has a hill like structure originating from its walls and appearing like teeth is called Dantavedha. Its leads to ill health and sorrows.
9. Sanghät Vedha – If there is a house in front at less than half the height of the house or the wall touches then it is called Sanghat Vedha. It leads to ill health in both the houses.

Following are the other situations of the house which are not considered good:
1. A house that is on the top or bottom of a hill or adjacent to a hill or surrounded by big boulders.
2. A house that is just at the end of a water stream or by the side of a river or between two hillocks having a pond closeby.
3. A house where doors make cracking sound on moving or house where crows and owls are seen.
4. A house that does not have a door.
5. A house that has a flow of water stream in the house, where fire incidence has taken place or where a python is seen.
6. A house where murder has taken place.
7. A house that doesn’t have rooms or kitchen.
8. A house that is surrounded by plants and weeds full of thorns.
9. A house that has a cremation ground nearby.
10. A house that is close to a temple.
11. A house where nobody lives.
Vishwakarma Prakash says that one should not live in such houses. Not only this, it also says that the material already used in a house should not be used in some other house; which means reuse of construction material of another house is prohibited. Further, it says that old wood should not be used.
There are some more defects that should be taken care of in the house. These will be discussed below:
1. There are five and sometimes six parts of Vastupurush that are referred to as Marma points or sensitive points. There should not be heavy load in the form of wall, pillar or any other kind of construction that can lead to pressure. These points are referred to as 1. Head 2. Mouth 3. Heart 4. Naval 5. Anus 6. Two nipples on the chest.
2. The squares formed by east to west and north to south lines forming parts or pada are not at right angle.
3 . A column coming in the middle of the building is not good.This is also called Hridayashalya
4. The column or pillar comes outside the boundary line of pada formation.
5 . Central line of all floors is not coinciding in one vertical plane.
6. A house that is devoid of a verandah or open space.
7. Two adjoining houses having different width also causes a defect.
8 . Size of the columns in the same row are different.
9. Road opening perpendicular to the main gate.
10. House is served by a dead end.
11. The road of the house in the rear is through the house in front.
12. Lamp lighting place or its niche is not at the same level as that of the locking arrangement.
13. Nail may be of wood or metal that is fixed above the door and below the ceiling.
14. Temple exactly in front of the gate
15. Brick work is not leveled .

16. Shadow of a temple, tree, or adjacent building during noon (2nd and 3rd part of the day).
Regarding the shadow of a tree, Aparajita Prichcha(51/30-31) has done the grading based on the type of tree. The inauspiciousness in increasing order is given below:  Bamboo tree – Betel nut tree The trees that produce milk – Peepal tree (Ficusreligiosa) – Amla tree – Shadow of complete tree . It further says that, if the shadow of the tree falls on the complete house during the noon, then that house should be discarded . Trees like Āk (Madar), Ashok (SaracaIndica), Peepal, Ketaki (umbrella tree or screw pine) and Beejora trees are not considered auspicious in the house. Such house will not have comforts, progress, affluence etc. (AparjitaPrichca 51/34). There is difference of opinion in respect to Banana tree as according to some, it is accepted in the house . Similarly plants having thorns, golden flowers, Kaner and that have bitter taste should not be planted in the house. Tree like Banyan, Teak, and Udumbar should not be in the house.Trees of Dates, Karaunda (Cranberry), Banana should also be avoided. In the middle portion nothing is allowed except Tulasi (Basil).
