Pleasing Maa Durga is less about grand rituals and more about devotion, purity, and strength of heart. She is Shakti – she responds to sincerity.
Here are the most loved ways to worship her:
1. Purity in thought and space
Keep your home, your altar, and your mind clean. Maa Durga loves cleanliness. Light a diya in the morning and evening, offer fresh flowers – especially red hibiscus and lotus – and keep the space calm and respectful.
2. Fasting and sattvic living
During Navratri and on Tuesdays and Fridays, many devotees keep a vrat. Even if you can’t do a full fast, eat simple, sattvic food, avoid anger, gossip, and harsh words. Self-discipline itself is an offering to her.
3. Mantras and Jaap
Chanting with focus is very powerful.
- Beej Mantra:
Om Dum Durgayei Namaha– 108 times daily - Sarva Mangala Mangalye:
Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive Sarvartha Sadhike Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namostute - Durga Chalisa or Argala Stotram – especially during Navratri
You don’t need to chant loudly. Even silent, heartfelt chanting counts.
4. Offerings she loves
- Red chunari, sindoor, bangles, and mehendi – offering shringaar to Maa
- Fruits, mishri, kheer, and coconut
- Clove and cardamom in paan
Offer with your right hand and with love, not out of fear.
5. Navratri Sadhana
The 9 nights are her most special time. You can:
- Do Kalash Sthapana
- Read one chapter of Durga Saptashati each day
- Meditate on her 9 forms – from Shailputri to Siddhidatri
Even if you do a small daily path for all 9 days without break, she notices consistency.
6. Seva and protecting Shakti
Maa Durga is the protector of dharma. The best way to please her is to:
- Respect and support women around you – mother, wife, daughter, colleagues
- Help those who are weak or in trouble
- Not tolerate injustice quietly
- Donate food, clothes, or help in a Devi temple or to a young girl – Kanya Pujan during Navratri is considered very dear to her
7. What to avoid
Avoid ego, cruelty, and using her name for show. She is Jagat Janani – a mother. She doesn’t want perfection, she wants a true heart. Pray like a child talking to his mother, not like asking a transaction.
A simple daily practice you can start tomorrow morning:
Light a diya, offer water and a flower, and say from the heart: “Maa, I am yours. Keep my mind strong and clean.” Do that daily.
Your 10-minute daily puja for Maa Durga
You need: a small photo/murti, a diya (ghee or oil), incense, fresh flower, a small glass of water, roli-kumkum.
1. Shuddhi (1 min)
Take bath, wear clean clothes. Sprinkle water on yourself and your puja place and say: Om Apavitrah Pavitro Va...
2. Sankalp (30 sec)
Fold hands. Say in your mind: “Maa, I am doing this puja for your happiness and for strength in my family.”
3. Aavahan and Diya (2 min)
Light the diya. Light incense. Offer flower at her feet. Put a little roli and rice. Offer water.
4. Jaap (5 min) – the heart of it
Close eyes. Do 3 slow breaths. Then chant:
Om Dum Durgayei Namaha – 108 times
Use a rudraksha mala if you have one, otherwise count on fingers. Don’t rush.
Then once say:
Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive Sarvartha Sadhike
Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namostute
5. Prarthana (1 min)
Talk to her like your own mother. No need for Sanskrit. “Maa, remove fear, give me courage to do what is right.”
Do aarti with the diya – just circle it 3 times clockwise in front of her. Sit in silence for 10 seconds. That silence is where she blesses.
If you can, do this Brahma muhurat or early morning, and again at sunset just lighting diya.
Puja Vidhi In Navratri
Starting with Ghatasthapana
Day 0 – Pratipada
If you want full puja: clean your altar, place a red cloth, keep a Kalash – a pot with water, mango leaves, coconut on top. If that’s too much, just place a red chunari behind Maa’s photo. Take sankalp to do 9 days without break.
Daily rule for 9 days:
- Wake early, no onion-garlic-alcohol if possible
- Keep one diya lit morning-evening (Akhand Jyot if you can manage)
- Read 1 chapter of Durga Saptashati or at least Durga Chalisa + Argala Stotram
What to worship each day:
- Day 1 – Shailputri – Daughter of mountains, strength to begin
- Day 2 – Brahmacharini – Tapasya and patience
- Day 3 – Chandraghanta – Peace and alertness
- Day 4 – Kushmanda – Creator of universe, health
- Day 5 – Skandamata – Mother of Skanda, protection for children
- Day 6 – Katyayani – Fighter of evil
- Day 7 – Kalaratri – Removes fear and negativity
- Day 8 – Mahagauri – Purity and forgiveness
- Day 9 – Siddhidatri – Gives siddhi and wisdom
- Day 10 – Vijayadashami / Dussehra – Victory
Ashtami & Navami special :
Do Kanya Pujan. Invite 2-9 young girls (2-10 years), wash their feet, offer them halwa-puri-chana, bangles, and take their blessing. Maa sees herself in them.
Dussehra
Do visarjan of Kalash water in a tulsi plant, and distribute prasad.
The most important niyam: Do not miss a day in between. Even if you are traveling, do the 10-minute jaap. Continuity matters more than grandeur.
